Fake Or Safe? What's Really In The Food You Eat?

You are viewing content from Kids FM - Let's Play! Lagos. Would you like to make this your preferred location?

Do you know what is in your food? Have you ever picked up your favorite snack and wondered, “What is actually inside this?”

Food can look tasty and exciting, but knowing what we eat is important too. From biscuits and drinks to noodles and sweets, the labels on food packs can tell us a lot.

Read the label!

One easy way to know more about your food is to check the label. Look for the name of the product, ingredients, expiry date, and information about how the food should be stored.

The ingredients are usually listed from the largest amount to the smallest. You might see words you do not recognize, but don't worry! Some ingredients have long names simply because they are scientific names.

Is it fake food?

Sometimes, people make or sell food products that are fake, poorly packaged or not what they claim to be. This is why it is important to buy food from trusted shops and check the packaging before eating it.

Be careful if a food pack looks damaged, has strange spelling, missing information, or a date that has already passed. If something looks suspicious, tell an adult instead of eating it.

Fresh food, happy family.

Fruits, vegetables, eggs, beans, rice, fish and other fresh foods can all be part of a healthy family meal. Eating different kinds of food gives your body the nutrients it needs to grow, learn, play, and stay active.

Remember, you don't have to become a food detective overnight. Just make it a habit to look, check, and ask questions.

So, fake or safe?

The next time you reach for a snack, take a few seconds to check the pack. A little curiosity can go a long way to keep you and your family safe.

What have you spotted in your food recently that made you turn into a food detective?
