Is there still a kid inside every adult?

You are viewing content from Kids FM - Let's Play! Lagos. Would you like to make this your preferred location?

Have you ever caught your dad singing loudly when he thinks nobody is listening? Or seen your mum suddenly become super excited about her favorite song?

Maybe you have even seen a grown-up laughing so hard that they look more like a child than an adult!

And you may have wondered:

“Wait… aren’t adults supposed to be serious all the time?”

Well, here is a little secret: grown-ups were kids once too!

Before they became mums, dads, teachers and other grown-ups, you know today, they had their own favorite games, songs, toys, friends and funny childhood stories.

So, does growing up really mean leaving the kid inside behind?

Not quite.

Before they became “MUM” and “DAD”

Long before your parents were telling you to brush your teeth, finish your homework or stop jumping on the sofa, they were busy being children themselves.

Your mum had a favorite game. Your dad probably had a favorite cartoon. They had friends, silly jokes, school adventures and maybe even a little trouble here and there.

Imagine your dad being told, “Stop playing and come inside!”

Sounds familiar, right?

That is because grown-ups did not arrive in the world as grown-ups. They had childhoods too.

The child inside never really disappears

Does the child inside ever disappear?

Growing up changes many things, but it does not erase the fun-loving part of a person.

Adults can still get excited about birthdays, enjoy games, dance when their favorite song comes on, laugh at funny stories, and become extremely competitive during family games!

They just have more responsibilities now.

They have work to do, bills to pay, meals to prepare, and families to look after.

But after all that, they still need moments to laugh, relax and have fun.

Ask your parents this!

Here is a fun experiment for you.

Tonight, ask your mum or dad:

“What were you like when you were my age?”

You might be surprised by the answer!

Ask them what games they played. Ask about their best friend. Ask what they wanted to become. Ask about the funniest thing that happened at school.

You may even discover that your serious-looking parent was once the child who could not sit still in class!

And while they tell you their stories, listen carefully.

You are not just hearing funny childhood stories. You are learning about the person they were before they became your parent.

Growing up can still be full of fun and excitement.

Being a grown-up means learning how to take responsibility. But it does not mean you have to stop being curious, creative, playful or excited about life.

Children remind adults to slow down and enjoy little things. Adults can teach children how to make good decisions and handle responsibilities.

That is why families need both sides.

Sometimes you teach them.

Sometimes they teach you.

If you could ask a grown-up one question about what they were like as a kid, what would you ask?
