Why Do Kids Suddenly Get Hungry At Night?

You are viewing content from Kids FM - Let's Play! Lagos. Would you like to make this your preferred location?

It is 10 p.m. Everyone is already in bed, the house is quiet, and then you hear it: “Mummy, I'm hungry!” But wait, didn't you just finish dinner?

For some reason, hunger always seems to appear at the most unexpected times. You can eat dinner at 7 p.m., brush your teeth, get into bed, and suddenly start thinking about meat pie, noodles, biscuits, or that leftover chicken in the kitchen.

But why does this happen?

Why Do You Feel Hungry at Night?

Kids and teenagers are growing every day, and their bodies need plenty of energy to support that growth. Sometimes, if you haven't eaten enough during the day or have spent hours playing, running, jumping, or taking part in other activities, you may feel hungry before bedtime.

There is another reason, too. Sometimes, we mistake boredom for hunger. When you're lying in bed with nothing to do, your brain may suddenly start thinking about food. Before you know it, you're imagining your favorite snacks!

Of course, feeling hungry at night isn't always about boredom. Your body may genuinely need more food, especially if you had an active day or didn't eat enough earlier.

The Midnight Food Debate

This is where things get interesting.

You quietly walk to the kitchen, open the fridge, and start searching for something to eat. Just as you're reaching for a snack, you hear footsteps.

“Who is in the kitchen?”

Caught!

Suddenly, your midnight food mission becomes a family discussion.

Should You Eat Before Bed?

If you're genuinely hungry, don't feel you have to ignore it or secretly search for food. Tell a parent or guardian, and they can help you decide whether you need a snack and what would be suitable before bedtime.

Eating balanced meals throughout the day and having healthy snacks when needed can help you get the energy your body requires. A satisfying dinner may also help prevent unexpected hunger later in the evening.

However, getting hungry at night occasionally is normal. What matters is listening to your body and talking to a trusted adult if you're frequently hungry, especially when it affects your sleep or daily activities.

Let's Talk!

Be honest: What's the first food you think about when you get hungry at night?

Meat pie? Noodles? Biscuits? Or that leftover chicken hiding in the kitchen?
