Why Do Parents Always Say: When I was your age?

Have you ever wondered why parents say “When I was your age…” so much?

Picture this: You get home from school feeling completely exhausted. You drop your bag, take a deep breath, and start telling your parents about how tiring your day was. 

Before you know it, you hear those familiar words: 

“When I was your age, I used to walk for hours to and from school…” Sound familiar?  

And how does it make you feel? Maybe a little misunderstood. Perhaps you’re thinking, “But I’m talking about my problem, not yours!” 

It can be frustrating. But there may be more behind those famous words than you think. 

They’re Sharing Their Experiences 

Parents often say “When I was your age” because they want us to learn from what they experienced growing up. 

Their childhood was probably very different from ours. Many parents grew up without smartphones, Wi-Fi, social media, video games, or some of the conveniences we have today. Some had to walk long distances to school, help with chores early in the morning, or find creative ways to entertain themselves without screens. 

So, when they compare their childhood with ours, they may be trying to remind us just how many things have changed. 

But Does It Mean Our Problems Don’t Matter? 

Not at all. 

Sometimes, hearing “I had it harder when I was your age” can make you feel as though your struggles aren't important. But your challenges can still be real, even if your parents experienced different ones. 

The important thing is to remember that parents may simply be trying to pass on a lesson from their own lives. 

Maybe they want you to appreciate what you have. Maybe they're encouraging you to be more patient, responsible, or grateful. Or perhaps they just want to tell you a story! 

And honestly, some of those stories can be pretty interesting. 

So, What Should You Do Next Time? 

When Dad or Mum starts with “When I was your age…”, try not to sigh just yet.  

Listen. You might discover something about your parents that you never knew. You may even learn a lesson that could help you handle your own challenges. 

After all, every generation has its own story.
